A Day of Lighthouses

Today we took advantage of a beautiful sunny but cold day and went to three lighthouses that are very close to us. It got very warm yesterday (48) and rained a lot so after the temperature dropped overnight there was lots of ice around today. Our first stop was Fort Williams Park and Portland Head Light.

Portland Head Light is the oldest lighthouse in Maine.

We could see the Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse from the park. It was really neat to watch the waves crash against it.

There was a nice walkway along the water called the cliff walk. There were some really icy areas which made it a little more interesting! The views however, were beautiful.

This cove was really neat because after the waves hit, the water made the coolest sound as it was going back out.

Our next stop of the day was Willard Beach. This is a very popular spot for people with dogs in the winter time. This time of year the dogs don’t have to be on a leash. I think Scott and I were the only ones on the beach without a dog.

Next, we headed to Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse. It was at the end of a 900 foot breakwater that we walked out on. It was very windy and cold when we got out there.

There was another lighthouse that was really close by so we headed on over to visit it also. Bug Lighthouse…

FYI: the water in this picture is all frozen!

From this point we could see the city of Portland and there was a building that looked like a lighthouse so we headed over the bridge to go drive around the city and find that building. Turns out, it’s the Portland Observatory.

This evening, the city of South Portland had part 1 of their WinterFest. There is a park with a lake that’s frozen over and they turn it into a skating rink. They had a live band, games, fire pits for s’mores, and hot chocolate. We went out there for a little bit. It was fun to watch the kids skate around the lake but it was soooo cold.

Part 2 of Winterfest is tomorrow. We may go check it out.
