Out and About In Portland

The weather surprised us today and it was a little nicer than we expected. We decided to head out to Macworth Island State Park to walk the trail around the island. I packed our hats, gloves, and balaclavas because I knew it would be cold and windy on the island. However, when we parked on the island I realized that I forgot the bag of hats and stuff at the house. Ooops… We attempted the trail anyway and Scott wanted to try out his new microspikes on his shoes. The path was pretty icy. He loved the spikes and didn’t slip at all but we had to abort the walk anyways due to cold and wind.

After we left the island, we headed into Portland to go to Holy Donuts. They have been highly recommended by just about everyone here. I’m a little bit leery of them since they are made from Maine mashed potatoes but willing to try them. Sadly, when we got there they were sold out of all of their donuts. We will try again at a later date. We walked around town just a little bit afterwards. There are some really pretty buildings in the city.

In other news… The roads here are horrible! They have tons of giant potholes, the intersections have way too many choices on which way to go (going straight either means going straight to the left or straight to the right and you can also turn left or turn right), and the paint for the lanes is pretty much invisible. All of this is fun when you’re in a new city trying to learn your way around. Interesting enough, today I read an article that said that the state of Maine has the worst drivers in the country. What a great combo, crazy roads and the worst drivers. Or maybe it’s the crazy roads that make the drivers bad.
