Island Hopping and St. Patrick’s Day

Saturday we did some Island hopping aboard the mailboat ferry. We were able to catch a ride on the ferry that delivers people, food, and supplies to some of the islands in the Casco Bay. It was a beautiful day except for the wind. It was a very enjoyable ride but I was thankful for my fleece lined pants and our hats and gloves. We took a bottle of wine and some chips and salsa and settled in for the 2.5 hour tour. Some of the people on the boat were carrying wagons of groceries that they got from the mainland. We were able to watch the ferry employees unload supplies and even a couch onto the islands. Living on an island sounds neat but at the same time I don’t know how I feel about being dependent on a ferry schedule. It was also pretty cool to see a couple of the lighthouses we have been to from the water.

This was on our way out. On our way back in the tide was coming in and this land bridge was no longer visible.

It doesn’t look like much in the pictures, but the waves were really big!

The view of Portland from the water.

Today we walked into Portland for the St. Patrick’s Day parade! We got there a little before the parade and had a pretty good spot at the beginning of the route. It was about 10 degrees colder today than yesterday. It was fine when we were walking, but standing still for the parade made us a little cold. The parade was short, sweet and cute.

Apparently, this is a popular mascot in the area. People were yelling his name and high fiving him. I guess that’s one of the downsides of not being from the area.

Loved the bagpipes!

Who you gonna call?!

A unicorn! Lol

I guess there are still a couple of things we need to check out in the city before we leave!

After the parade we were going to grab some lunch and drinks at one of the many Irish pubs but, there were long lines at every single one and it looked like standing room only inside. We decided to start walking back home and find something else along the way. When we got back into South Portland we stopped at Foulmouthed Brewing. We had delicious burgers and I enjoyed a good beer.

After lunch we continued our walk home. On our walk we passed Red’s Dairy Freeze which just opened for the season this week. We each got a nor’easter (comparable to DQ blizzard). Scott had peppermint ice cream with Andes mints and I had vanilla ice cream with Nerds! Soooo good.

Although we did not get a picture of us today, I assure you we were wearing green! Scott was quite surprised to find out that I had “drug” St Patrick’s Day shirts across the country with us! ☘️
