Long Weekend Adventure, Part 3

Today we continued our adventures into a different part of Maine, still with hopes of seeing a moose. The day was beautiful and on our way our, we finally got a good view of Mt. Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine.

A picture from our drive. There were some very scenic spots. Unfortunately, pictures don’t do it justice.

We headed to a town called The Forks to see a waterfall called Moxie Falls, one of Maine’s highest waterfalls. We were hoping that the parking area would be plowed so that we could make the hike. When we made it to the trailhead, we were happy to see it was plowed enough for a few cars to get in. Scott checked the condition of the trail and we decided to proceed. The trail was packed nicely which made it easier to walk on. With the temperatures being warmer the last couple of days it was a little slick in places but we managed just fine. There were some parts of the trail that were downhill and it was easier to slide down than to try to walk. It’s fascinating to see that the volume of water coming over the falls is able to freeze.

The snow was so deep that we were almost standing above the guard rail of the viewing platform.

After we completed this hike, we headed back to a maple farm. Here are a few pictures from our drive. The snow on the side of the river was about 6 feet deep. It was also interesting how the ice on the river just stops all of the sudden.

Today was Maine Maple Sunday and a lot of the maple producers were having open house type events today. We were lucky enough to pass by one on our trip today so we stopped. It was Moscow Maple that we stopped by. On the way in we could see the tap lines coming from the trees.

They had a cute little hut where the “magic” happens.

When we went inside we were greeted with fresh and still warm maple syrup. The owner came and introduced himself and walked Scott and I around and explained the the whole process. They also had lots of maple foods available to sample. Since we went at the end of the day, some were already gone. I tried a maple dip on a graham cracker and Scott had a maple whoopie pie. It was a really neat experience. We even bought some real Maine maple syrup to take with us.

We headed on home. When we got home we took advantage of what was left of the daylight and walked down to Willard Beach. There was a very nice sunset.

Sadly, despite all of our efforts, we did not see any moose. There was once were I slammed on the brakes and did a u-turn for what I thought was a moose. Turns out it was just a deer. Oh well… can’t say we didn’t try.
