4th of July

We spent 4th of July hanging around town.  Seaside had several activities going on throughout the day.  We started the day by walking downtown to watch the parade.  The weather channel said that the high for the day was going to be 70 so we dressed accordingly.  However, it never got to 70!  I’m not sure it was much above 60.  This was the first 4th of July that I can remember where I wasn’t sweating.  We made it to the parade route and had a decent view of it.  Can’t say that we were all that impressed with the parade. There were large gaps in the floats (like 5 minutes sometimes) and they were not allowed to throw candy.

After the parade we went to the Seaside Museum where they were having an old fashioned social.  They had a silent auction, live band, lots of food, cake walk, bingo, and other activities.  We had lunch here and of course dessert!  They strawberry pie was not what I expected but the strawberry shortcake was amazing.  There were lots and lots of people.  We didn’t stay too long because it was windy, cold, and overcast.  It actually sprinkled on us a little on our walk back.

We walked home along the promenade to see what kind of activity as going on on the beach.  There were lots of people set up to spend the entire day in their spots to be able to watch the fireworks.  There was a large section of the beach roped off to keep people a safe distance from where they were going to be setting off the fireworks.

For the fireworks in the evening we decided to find a spot in the cove to view them. People had told us that we would be able to see fireworks from several towns along the coast.  The weather did not provide the best conditions for this.  We were able to see lots of fireworks along the coast at times though. There were lots of people shooting off their own “illegal” fireworks. Some of them were actually better than what we saw from the Seaside show.  When it came time for Seaside’s official show (after 10pm) there was no wind.  This may not seem like a problem but it did not move the smoke from the explosions so after a few, we just got to see a ball of smoke change colors.  There were also people shooting off fireworks right behind us and over our heads!

We did get to enjoy one of the best sunsets yet while we waited for it to get dark enough for the fireworks to begin.
