Arethusa Falls

Today we checked off another destination on my list of places to go while we are here in Maine, Arethusa Falls. It’s a waterfall that is a popular winter hike because it freezes over and ice climbers like to climb it. The hike was 1.5 miles each way with an elevation gain of about 900 feet. The snow on the trail was pretty well packed down but there was a layer of fresh powder from the snowfall last night. We felt like all of the elevation gain was in the first part of the trail. It was definitely a workout! It was a beautiful 25 degree sunny day, so it was a perfect day to do stuff outside. The snow makes everything look so pretty. With that much snow on the ground you really have no clue what you’re really walking on.

We finally made it to the falls! It was ginormous and frozen but you could still hear the water running beneath the ice.

This line was already in the snow and it made me think of a smiley face so I threw 2 snowballs into the snow for the eyes to complete the look!

We got a brief view of Mt. Washington from the trail.

The cliff in the distance is called Frankenstein Cliff. We chose not to hike that trail today.

On the way home we were going to stop at Cathedral Ledge because we had passed a sign for it in the way to the falls. We didn’t get there because they don’t keep the road clear in the winter. These were the best pictures we were able to get from the road that was open.

We had a lot of fun today even though hiking 3 miles in the snow in a temperature of 25 degrees kicked our butts!
